Buying or selling a home can be a complicated and even scary process, which is why it’s so important to have a realtor you trust to help guide you through. But with so many out there to choose from, where do you start? You don’t want to make a rushed decision and end up spending money on a Realtor® who might turn out not to be a great fit. We came up with this list of seven tips to help you find your “perfect match” Realtor®.
Ask Previous Clients
When you’ve found a Realtor® you think might be a good fit, it’s a great idea to speak with some of their previous clients to learn about their experience. A Realtor® who seems great on paper could turn out to be your last choice if you find out that they rushed previous clients through the process.
What to ask: Were you happy with this Realtor®? Why or why not?
Learn about Licensing
This may be a no-brainer, but you want to make sure that your potential Realtor® is licensed. Check with the state board to see if your Realtor® is licensed, and whether they’ve had any disciplinary issues in the past.
What to ask: Is my Realtor® licensed?
Look for the Credentials
You may not be aware that realtors are sometimes trained in different specialties, such as working with seniors or specifically representing buyers. You’ll want to find a Realtor® whose specialty fits your needs.
What to ask: What type of real estate do you specialize in?
Find a Go-Getter
When it comes to buying or selling a home, you want a Realtor® who will be committed and professional. Realtors® who’ve been recognized with awards by their peers, such as a “Realtor® of the Year” award from their local branch of the National Association of Realtors®, have shown their merit in the past.
What to ask: Have you ever been recognized for your work?
Look at their Listings
Browsing your potential realtor’s listings can give you a good idea of how they market their homes and whether they have a healthy amount of business. If you see listings that are similar to the home you want to buy or sell, this Realtor® might be a good fit.
What to ask: What homes do you currently have listed?
Test their Knowledge
Ideally, your Realtor® should be familiar with the area where you want to buy or sell your home. Ask them about schools, amenities and other homes for sale in the neighborhood or surrounding area to find out how well they know the community.
What to ask: Do you know of any other homes for sale in this area? What school systems are in this area-are they good?
Look for a Track Record
While a lot of factors go into choosing a Realtor®, it may all come down to one thing: experience. The process will go much more smoothly if you pick an agent with tangible experience rather than a new Realtor® in the first five years of their career. Knowing that they have years of experience in the area that you are looking to buy in will ensure that the are invested and knowledgable.
What to ask: How long have you been a Realtor®? How long have you worked in this area?
While we know it’s exciting, finding the perfect Realtor® takes time so it’s important not to rush the process. Make sure you interview a few realtors before you decide on one to ensure that you find the perfect fit – it will be worth it in the end.
