Ignoring Home Repairs Can Cost You

Owning a home comes with a lot of ups and a few downs… like home repairs. What you think may be a relaxing weekend at home can turn into day or two of home repairs. Making occasional repairs is part of owning a home and it’s important to keep up with everything that needs fixing. Skipping home projects, small or large, can wind up costing you more money than you bargained for in the long run. Here are a few common repairs that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

This has been a very wet summer for us here in Colorado, and that’s a good thing! However, above average rain storms also means frequent hail. Although there may not be any leaks in your roof, you may want to check for loose or damaged shingles. If you wait until the next storm you could experience a bad flood which will cost you more than you bargained for.

Speaking of flooding, how are your gutters and plumbing? Broken pipes, appliance failures and cracked gutters can cause thousands of dollars of damage to your home from the initial flood to the time you get everything fixed. Take a moment to check supply hoses on your appliances for leaks or worn spots. If you find anything, replace the hose for cheap. If you see any cracks or holes in your gutters, find a professional to fix or replace them for you. All of this will cost significantly less a flood damage repairs.

Another home hotspot to check is your heating system. If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old have a professional come in and do an inspection. Have them clean and maintain your system and give you a report on how it is doing. If it needs to be replaced, do it now.

If an accident does happen in your home, your home insurance will likely cover all of these claims. However, you will still have to pay the deductible and your premiums will go up. Putting a little work and money into your home now means you stand a better chance of avoiding costly repairs down the road.
